Sodom was formed as a punk band by Zazie with some friends from school, in 1981, Japan. They played hardcore punk until 1984 – 1985, by that time they where, much like Sadie Sads, fascinated with the industrial scene, and started experimenting with sound which resulted in a more post punk/industrial sound. In 1987 they left the whole post punk/industrial sound, and started making house music, which resulted in a few releases, until they dissolved the band in 1991. Some band members like Zazie where busy with there solo projects, and stayed active in the music scene. in 2007 Zazie reformed Sodom under the name: “The Sodom Project”. This is a release from there punk period, good old hardcore punk. St. Requiem was released as a cassette by Gomorrah Records (SM-T1) in 1984. Cassette album in 7″ single’s Sleeve.

Tracks:

Sonatas & St. Requiem

Wild Fire

Neo Psychick

Night Burning

Dung

Chrome

Kid Napper

Frog

Construct

Pizz

A-Flat & Lust!

Mouse To Mouth

Vanish

Acoustic Birds

Rock Out

Terminal Point

Over Lap

(Tracks 15 & 16 are recorded together)

St. Requiem

enjoy

Sodom – TV Murder

Here’s the second Sodom request, a whole lot different than the previous cassette I posted. And Pierre Lambow was his collaborator, both A Produce and Pierre Lambow played in the rock group “The Blank Ensemble” in the 1970′s. Pierre Lambow left this world in 1992. By this connection you can guess that the style of this release is a blend between ambient and minimal electronics. Excellent experimental album from this Italian musician, composer and sound designer, the influence of both NWW and Ramleh is very audible on the album, as M.T.T. had no idea of how to get an album together and their records (NWW and Ramleh) were so inspiring, so he thought that their help could have been good for me. This is an unfortunate thing, since I am inspired to create and write everytime I hear it. Now when one usually thinks of Free Jazz, they think Sun Ra, Coltrane-late 60's, and the man who coined the term Free Jazz- Ornette Coleman. In my opinion, one of the most underrated free jazz saxophonists is Sam Rivers. His ensemble, the Sam Rivers Rivbea Orchestra, recently released a record on Aurora releases called Aurora, but unfortunately I haven't heard this yet. I want you to listen to a couple tracks from a live recording from the Bim Huis in Amsterdam-1976 called Essence- the Heat and Warmth of Free Jazz. As I listen to this record, I feel the raw spontaneity combined with skilled musicianship that inspired countless free-jazz musicians to practice until they deeply felt the passion and soul in their own music. The band consisted of Sam Rivers on flute and tenor sax, Joe Daley on tuba and Warren Smith on drums. Each of them play a short solo before the band let's loose with wild abandon on the track entitled Part IV- Group With the Tenor Sax. It is very refreshing to hear Sam walk the line between classic Blue Note-era hard bop and Albert Ayler-inspired cathartic squawking and squealing. However, this album has too much unbridled imagination and creativity to be dismissed as a cacophonous racket. It even features an incendiary, psychedelic flute solo on the last track entitled Part V- Group with the Flute that doesn't sound like anything else in the Jazz world.
I found this description about the album on the Oink website, which is a torrent download site focusing on rare independent records:

His tenor is brimming with idiosyncratic fire, while his flute spools out long strands of melody. The interaction between Rivers, Daley and Smith is markedly different than with other 70's trio, with Dave Holland and Barry Altschul. Daley tapped a vocal quality that is largely, if not totally unavailable to a bass player. Smith’s background as an orchestra percussionist informs his playing to an appreciable degree, distinguishing him from Altschul, who is primarily a jazz kit player. Once the solos are performed, the trio heats up rapidly.
Enjoy listening to this rare stuff!

Fuzz-Funk Friday

For those of you who don't know, "fuzz-funk" is that type of funk that features guitar and/or bass that has been filtered through a fuzzbox. According to Wikipedia a fuzzbox "alters an audio signal until it is nearly a square wave and adds complex overtones by way of a frequency multiplier". Put in laymnan terms, it simply creates a warm buzzing sound that amplifies the normal sound of the guitar, creating interesting sonic textures that are pleasing to the ear. I have found many songs to be more palatable simply because they have a little fuzz guitar added to the mix.

Today's post contains a funky fuzz gem from Curly Davis and the Uniques called "Black Cobra Part 2". This song was featured on the fantastic compilation called Chains and Black Exhaust that was originally released in 2002 on the Memphix label. Due to the compilation's popularity, it went out of print almost immediately. Six years later it was reissued on the same label sans the Iron Knowledge track "Showstopper", only to go out-of-print quickly once again. The Curly Davis track is an absolute mind-melting instrumental with screaming fuzz guitar laid over a bed of greasy bass and frenetic drums. It takes off like a rocketship from the get-go and only lets up in the middle of the song for a short drum break that has likely been sampled by a crate digger like Peanut Butter Wolf or Madlib. Despite this break, the track never loses steam, as it picks up where it left off with a funky wah-wah rhythm played over the top of a blistering fuzz guitar solo. I had to pick my mouth up off the floor after listening to this track.

Curly Davis and the Uniques-  <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;
